Pros and Cons of EHEIM Substrat Pro Biological Filter Media:

EHEIM Substrat Pro is a type of biological filter media developed in Germany. Porous glass beads are created by compressing extremely fine glass particles with each other. The procedure of compressing is also known as sintering & it makes the beads extremely porous. The porous surface of the beads allows heaps of good bacteria to cling to it.

Lab has used sintered glass like EHEIM Substrat Pro to establish colonies of good bacteria in a controlled environment. This is the reason why this media is extremely good. That is why EHEIM chose to use the procedure & develop their sintered pearl-shaped glass beads for biological filtration.

EHEIM develops canister filters therefore; EHEIM media fits well in a canister filter’s basket. EHEIM Substrat Pro is a best choice for larger canister filters used for both freshwater & saltwater aquariums.

EHEIM Substrat Pro can be installed inside a mesh filter bag in the HOB or canister filters.

Substrat Pro offers 1800 sq. feet of surface area for each gallon of volume, with enough room for a living colony of good bacteria.

The porous surface of EHEIM Substrat Pro allows denitrifying bacteria to establish. Inside the porous region, oxygen is not present so denitrifying bacteria grow in abundance. Nitrifying bacteria clings to the outer surface of the media. When water containing toxic chemicals flows through the Substrat Pro, the waste is broken down into nitrites & nitrates by nitrifying bacteria, while denitrifying bacteria inside the pores remove nitrates from the water.

In this article, we have added major Pros and Cons of EHEIM Substrat Pro:

Pros of EHEIM Substrat Pro:

  • Glass beads would not break down in the fish tank.
  • The beads can be simply cleaned by washing the media with aquarium water.
  • This media carries both nitrifying & denitrifying bacteria for complete removal of the toxic chemicals released from organic waste.
  • Provides heaps of surface for colonization of good bacteria.
  • This bio media can be used for both freshwater & saltwater aquariums.

Cons of EHEIM Substrat Pro:

  • This bio media is a little costly.
