What are the Pros and Cons of Mechanical Filters?

Mechanical filtration removes solid particles from the water such as organic waste and dead plants matter. Water is pushed through the foam or sponge using a pump. Solid particles will be trapped by the foam while clean will be allowed to pass through it. If organic matter is not collected on time, then it will leach out dangerous chemicals that are harmful for aquatic life. Aquarium filtration is very basic and it requires frequent cleaning for best efficiency. If the mechanical filter is not cleaned on time, then the media will be clogged & it will affect its cleaning efficiency. In this article, I have discussed the benefits of having a mechanical filter in aquariums & its drawbacks.

Pros and Cons of Aquarium Mechanical Filters
Pros and Cons of Aquarium Mechanical Filters

Pros of Mechanical Filters:

Mechanical filters wipe out detritus very quickly, like fish waste & other solid impurities, from the aquarium water. Therefore, you will watch results soon after adding a mechanical filter to your aquarium.

Mechanical filters provide higher customization than bio filters. You can select from many different types & sizes of mechanical media to meet the requirements of your fish tank.

Mechanical filters offer versatility, & they can be installed in different fish tanks & aquatic environments. They are helpful for small & big aquariums, & can be used together with other types of filtration options if required.

Cons of Mechanical Filters:

While mechanical filters are usually simpler to maintain compared to bio filters, they need higher cleaning to work efficiently. This can take longer time & hard work, especially if you have a big pond.

Mechanical filters reduce oxygen levels in your aquarium. Because they wipe out particles & detritus, which reduces oxygen in the water. If you have many fish & other inhabitants, this can be a problem.

Mechanical filters may not be very efficient at cleaning compared to bio filters. Such as, they may not be very efficient at wiping out nitrates & other nutrition from the water compared to bio filters.
