I have used treated pine timber for making the full backyard garden pond. I have used the following specification of timber: 2x4 or 90x45mm for building a frame of the garden pond which covers all four sides of the pond. I have used the following treated pine sleepers’ specification for making the pond base: 200x50 mm. To see the fish, I have decided to use a glass window. Glass window is added towards the face of the home so my family members can see the fish from the inside of the home.
At this stage, I have not chosen what type of fish I will keep in this DIY backyard garden pond. I wanted to keep things as low price as possible but the stuff required for making this DIY backyard pond was expensive. Timber & screws were costly. This is not the top backyard garden pond but I have spent lots of time making this DIY backyard garden pond. I would appreciate if you watch how I build this DIY Backyard Garden Pond in the video below:
Material:
- Timber: Treated pine 90x45mm 'Australia' or 2x4 'US'
- Sleepers: Treated pine 200x50mm
- Rough Sawn Post: Treated 100x100mm
Screws:
- Buildex 10-8 x 100mm Climacoat® 3 Countersunk Rib Head Treated Pine Screws
- Buildex 10-8 x 75mm Climacoat® 3 Countersunk Rib Head Treated Pine Screws
- Buildex 14-10 x 100mm Climacoat Bugle Head Batten Timber Screws
Tools Required:
- Drop Saw or Mitre saw
- Electric drill
- Spirit Level
- Sandpaper
Step 1: Use Ecoseal to fix cuts & holes in timber:
Ecoseal is a sealer &
moisture repellent for cuts & holes in pressure treated timber.
Step 2: Back Frame of DIY Backyard Garden Pond:
Setup a rectangular frame of wood
for the back of the pond. Add glue at the corners & fix the corners of the
frame with screws. You can use any brand of glue for perfect bonding. Back
frame of the pond will be facing the fence.
For additional support, use
uprights at evenly spaced. These extra blocks of wood will make the frame
stronger. Gently add glue on the edges of uprights, & fix them evenly
spaced between the back frame using screws. Use as much glue as you could use
for a harder frame.
Step 3: Front Frame of DIY Backyard Garden Pond:
The front frame has a glass
window in the center that lets you see your fish. Setup a rectangular frame of
pine timber for the front of the DIY garden pond. Apply glue at the corners of
the frame & fix corners with screws. For more support add uprights. Make
sure you leave enough space in the middle of the frame for adding a glass
window.
Use additional bracing in the
pond window frame for further support.
For extra support attach another
wood block to the original block. Make sure you apply glue between both wood
blocks. Fix the additional block to the main block using screws. Make sure you
also fix this block to the frame using screws.
Step 4: Side Frames of DIY Backyard Garden Pond:
Setup a rectangular frame of pine
timber for the sides. Use upright in the middle for extra support. Use extra
bracing for side frames too.
Attach all garden pond frames to
the post. First apply glue on the post & then fix all garden pond frames to
it using screws.
Step 5: Base of DIY Backyard Garden Pond:
Base of backyard garden pond is made up of treated
pine sleepers. Cover the base of the garden pond with treated pine sleepers.
Apply glue before fixing them. Then use screws to fix treated pine sleepers to
the base of the pond.
Step 6: Sealing all the Cuts & Waterproofing Pond:
It is time to quickly seal all the cuts & holes in the pond. In the next tutorial, I am going to waterproof & insulate the pond. Have a look at the next tutorial below:
