Which aquarium filter is best for Tiger Oscar fish?
The size & efficiency of the filter required for Oscar fish is fully based on how large your aquarium is. The simplest aquariums to manage are large with external sump filters or canister filters. The filters are equipped with both mechanical & biological media. The drawback of large external filters is that they consume space outside aquarium. Also, you should setup pipe assembly to pump dirty water to the outside filter, and clean water should be pumped back to the aquarium. Fish eggs or fries will be sucked by the filter if you do not cover the inlet valve with a coarse sponge. Adding sponge will slow down water flow, hence it will reduce the filtration power of the filter. The main advantage of external filters is that they clean the tank almost 100%, & your fish will live in clean & tidy aquarium. Without a filter, dirty water will be stressful for your fish & your fish will get ill if you do not add a strong filter. For selecting a filter, it is recommended to choose one that has more space for filtration media, & it offers more gallons per hour (GPH) than your aquarium size. Therefore, it is recommended to use SUMP or canister filters as they offer heaps of storage for filter media & are operated at high GPH. More GPH will help in pumping water quickly to the filter & clean heaps of water in short time. Chemical filtration media is not necessary for filters. If you want to install chemical filtration then you can use activated carbon or charcoal. It is important to cycle your aquarium when you install filter so that the inside filtration media can develop heaps of good bacteria. If you have small fish or fries that can be sucked by the inlet valve of the filter, then you can use coarse foam or sponge on the inlet valve that will stop little fish or eggs from entering the filter.
What aquarium filter is best for Tiger Oscar fish?
We would advise you to use an external SUMP or canister filter for Tiger Oscar fish as they carry heaps of filter media & clean many gallons of water in a short time. It is easy to manage an external filter as you won't have to mess with your aquarium water & fish when cleaning your filter because the filter is located outside aquarium. The good news is that external SUMP or canister filters require low maintenance.
