Cross / Selective Breeding of Betta fish for different tail types:

Betta fish are very popular due to their beautiful tail / fin patterns, & mixed coloration. Aquarists keep Betta fish in bowls & aquariums, & they have many different variations depending on their tail / fin patterns. Betta fish tail type cross breeding can produce different color varieties & tail patterns. In this article, we have summarised which type of Betta offspring you can expect from cross breedings of different types of Betta.
  • It should be noted that the parents betta fish should be at least five generations pure.
  • 85 to 95%, you will see the following outcomes.

Long fin / tail genes are more powerful over short fin tail genes

Long fin (HM, CT, VT) when cross breed with Short fin, they deliver Long fin babies.

  • Short Fin: Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK) when cross breed with Long Fin: Halfmoon (HM), they produce Super Delta / Halfmoon offspring.
  • Short Fin: Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK) when cross breed with Long Fin: Crowntail (CT), they give birth to Halfsun fries.
  • Long Fin: Halfmoon (HM) when cross breed with Long Fin: Crowntail (CT), they produce Halfsun fries.

  • Veiltail (VT) when cross breed with Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK), they deliver Delta tail fries.
  • Veiltail (VT) when cross breeding with Halfmoon (HM), they produce Super Delta tail.
  • Veiltail (VT) cross breeding with Crowntail (CT) will give you mostly Veiltail with web reduction in their fins. Fins will seem messy if you cross breed Veiltail (VT) with Crowntail (CT).

  • Crowntail Plakat (CTPK) when cross breed with Halfmoon (HM), they produce Halfsun.
  • Crowntail Plakat (CTPK) cross breeding with Veiltail (VT) will give birth to Halfsun offspring.
  • Crowntail Plakat (CTPK) cross breeding with Crowntail (CT) will produce Crowntail (CT).

Single tail genes are more powerful over Double tail genes

Double tail (HM, PK, VT) cross breeding with Single tail (HM, PK, VT) will produce Single tail offspring.

  • Double tail Plakat (DTPK) cross breeding with HalfMoon Plakat (HMPK) will produce Round tail (HMPK).
  • Double tail Plakat (DTPK) when cross breed with Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM), they give birth to Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM).
  • Double tail Plakat (DTPK) when cross breed with Halfmoon (HM) produces Delta tail.
  • Double tail Plakat (DTPK) when cross breed with Crown tail (CT) produces Halfsun.
  • Double tail Plakat (DTPK) when cross breed with Veil tail (VT) produces Delta tail.

  • Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM) when cross breed with Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK) have Delta tail offspring.
  • Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM) when cross breed with Crowntail (CT) have Halfsun offspring.
  • Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM) when cross breed with Halfmoon (HM) produces Super Delta / Halfmoon fries.
  • Double tail Halfmoon (DTHM) when cross breed with Veiltail (VT) delivers Delta tail babies.

Normal Pectoral genes are more powerful over large pectoral genes

Large Pectoral (Dumbo) when cross breed with Small Pectoral (Regular) delivers Small Pectoral (Regular).

  • Dumbo (HMPK) when cross breed with Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK) delivers Regular Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK).
  • Dumbo Halfmoon when cross breed with Halfmoon (HM) delivers Regular Halfmoon offspring.
  • Dumbo Double tail Plakat (DTPK) when cross breed with Double tail Plakat (DTPK) produces Regular Double tail Plakat (DTPK) babies.
