Breed Guppy Fish for Profit / How to make money in Breeding & Raising Guppies:

Guppy belongs to Poecilia reticulate family, & it is a popular fish. This fish is native to South America. There are about 300 types of guppies in Amazon river. It is a live bearer like molly & platy, & its babies swim freely when born. It is easy to distinguish between male & female guppies. The former is colorful with lengthy fins while the latter is not very colorful & have large bodies.

The care level of guppy is simple & your fish tank needs to be at least 20 gallons large if you want to breed them. Use gravels at the bottom of the aquarium. Live plants are better for guppy aquarium. Cycle your aquarium before adding any fish to it.

Aquarium Setup for Guppies:

Guppies do not make too much poop due to their small size but still require a filter. My advice is to add a sponge filter because it won’t suck the babies & fries can eat the remaining food on the sponges. Sponge filter can provide mechanical & biological filtration.

Guppy fish likes to live in 75 – 80 Degree Fahrenheit. Keeping it in cool temp. could get them ill. Heater is recommended in a guppy tank.

Add a light to your aquarium for live plants & guppy. In the presence of aquarium light, plants will inhale CO2 & exhale oxygen, & if light is switched off then the reverse process will begin. Your fish will be more active in the presence of light & they will be looking for food & will be swimming with other fish.

Guppies when kept in planted aquariums have less stress & they like their environment. They like hiding in plants, rocks & decorations. They can enjoy the natural environment that plants provide. Fries need plants to hide from adult fish. They eat micro-organism growing on live plants but later they need other foods like flakes for quick growth.

Guppy Water Conditions:

Guppies need pH level of 7 or greater. Add hard water to aquarium with high calcium, magnesium, & crucial minerals. If you have soft water in aquarium, then my suggestion is adding Wonder Shell to aquarium water, which helps in the water hardness & providing vital minerals for the fish.

Breeding Guppies & Raising Babies:

If you want to breed guppy fish, then my advice is to add 1 male for every 2 female guppies. A single mother can produce babies from 1 to 100. The colors of the fries are normally visible in about 3 months & by that time, their mother would have given birth to 3 batches of fries.

If baby guppies are born in the same tank as adults then you can separate the fries using fish net. Setup a breeder box in the same aquarium as adult. Breeder box uses mesh to avoid babies from escaping it. This way they are separated from the adults & can survive. Shift guppy fries to a separate aquarium when they grow a bit which help in faster growth of the juveniles.

Raising fries is simple & there is no need to do extra maintenance if you setup a breeder box in the early stages of their lives.

In a separate aquarium for guppy babies, my advice is to add a sponge filter because it can help the juveniles to scrap the leftover food attached to the sponges.

Guppy Diet:

Guppies are a big eater & often hobbyists overfeed them which cause constipation & could affect their health. Provide food to them once or twice a day, & make sure all added food is eaten up by the fish in a minute. They like to eat every kind of diet & would also eat algae growing in the aquarium. Offer them brine shrimp, pellets, flakes or other diets.

Breed Guppy Fish For Profit:

If you are willing to breed & sell fish, then first I would recommend doing research about how to breed fish & raise the fries, & what equipment are needed for raising the babies. Many aquarists want to know whether they can earn money for breeding & raising fish. Yes, you can earn cash, but only if you do everything correctly. It is very important to talk to fish store owner & learn about the amount of money that can be earned for selling fish & which fish is in demand so if you breed them, then fish stores will purchase it from you.

Fish shops can share information about which fish they sell in their shops & how much they can offer you for that. Also find opportunities for selling fish online, because I have seen hobbyists selling their pets online for a good price.

Breed Choice and Required Equipment:

After discussion to fish shop owners, then it is time to know which fish is more profitable to breed in your area. Learn about the price that you will spend on their diet, & how to save your fish from getting ill. Get information about the needed equipment, & the size of the fish tank they need. Which filter can clean your fish tank & which water conditions are best for your tank?

Transportation:

Fish tank size & oxygen requirements can help you in determining the size of container best for transporting your fish. Transporting bags should be big enough. If you are selling little fish then fill bags with about 1/3 of water. Fill bag with half of water if you are selling fish about 3 inches or bigger. Learn about the requirements from the shipper. Stop feeding your fish for 1 – 3 days before shipping, so they do not poop in the bags. Use boxes that have an insulated foam inner cooler, which can keep your fish warm in the winter. Ship fish overnight, & make sure that the person is available at the recipient’s address.

Can You Make Profit By Breeding and Selling Fish?

Not much money can be earned if you want to breed & sell fish so my advice is that other job can help you in earning more if you spend the same amount of work in them. Fish farms sell millions of fish for a slim profit on individual fish. If you make fish breeding & selling a side business, then the earned wealth can be used to pay for your fish hobby costs, & you can make some profit too. It is better to start a small business & do not buy many fish tanks & equipment in the beginning.

Best stuff for Breeding Fish:

Many small fish can be bred in just 20-gallon fish tank so I think you can start with a 20-gallon aquarium. Add a heater, filter & fish. If you are looking for more ways to increase your profit, then I can help you.

I think a good idea is to add plants to your fish tank that can help you make more wealth through this business. Adding java moss is a good option that can grow easily & can help in covering the fries & increasing their chances of survival. Their growth rate is slow & fish stores sell them too quickly so you can sell a bucket full of this plant for $20 a month. When you breed java moss in the aquarium, then you can breed red cherry shrimp. Selling 25 shrimp can help in earning $25 a month if the selling price is $1. It can help you earn $70 a month with only 1 aquarium.

Breeding Guppy Fish for Money:

If you are looking for a fish that is in high demand everywhere then I would advise you to breed guppy. It is a hardy fish & best for new aquarists. Guppies breed on its own, if male & female fish is present. They seem beautiful & they are one of the top choice of aquarists.

Guppy is active & strong, & they live peacefully with other small peaceful fish. Guppy is a low-price fish. They do no need advanced tank setup, & they are able to live well in normal aquarium conditions.

Guppies like planted aquariums, & are happy in fish tanks with rocks & structures which can increase the beauty of the aquarium, & can offer hiding places for the babies. Adding decorations in the aquarium can help stressed guppy to hide & babies have more chances of survival if they are in tank with decorations & plantations because adult fish might eat them.

Pros and cons of breeding guppy fish for profit:

Pros of making money by breeding & selling guppy:

  • Earn a little wealth in hobby.
  • If you are good at breeding guppies then you can make the species better which is a positive thing in fish keeping hobby.
  • Enjoy raising the fries.
  • A small aquarium can help you in raising many guppy fries because of their small size.
  • Help you in making better relationship with fish shop owners. It can help you in getting discounts on fish, special orders etc.

Cons of making money by breeding & selling guppy:

  • There is lots of hard work in raising fish which could be tiresome for those doing full time jobs.
  • Fish stores might not buy fish from you.
  • You can’t make much profit so do not make it a full-time job.
  • Babies are weak & need care in raising them.
  • Cost of raising fish could be higher than profit because your fish needs heater, filter, food & ideal water conditions. To minimize costs, I would advise you to buy fish that adapt to your region so heater can be avoided.
