How to build aquarium stand

In today’s tutorial I am going to show you how to build an aquarium stand for a 4 feet tank. The precise dimensions of my aquarium are:
  • Length: 123 cm
  • Width: 36 cm
  • Height: 51 cm

DIY: Make an aquarium stand

I build this stand using 2 x 4 wood & it is very durable & also I added additional supports & bracing to increase the holding strength of aquarium stand. It is even possible to use the same design & same no. of 2 x 4’s for a 5 feet fish tank. I have used wood screws that are 75 mm long.

Tools needed to build an aquarium stand:

  • Use any saw available at home including table saw / jigsaw / hand saw, or purchase pre-cut wood
  • Electric drill can be used to drill holes
  • Electric screw driver can be used for screwing
  • Use a hammer
  • Use wood glue but it is optional not recommended.
  • Use level for better finishing

Steps: How to build an aquarium stand:

In this video I will show you how to build a cheap aquarium stand which can be upgraded to include cabinets but I have kept this design simple. Watch video till the end & follow step by step procedure.

Step 1: Cut wood boards according to required dimension:

I have cut the wood boards according to my required size. 4 boards are 124 cm in length. 6 boards are 82 cm in length. 10 boards are 64 cm in length & another 10 boards are 28 cm in length.

Step 2: Make a top rectangular frame:

I put 4 boards on the ground to make a top rectangular frame. Then I glued the end joints & started screwing screws into the joints using electric screw driver to prepare the top rectangular frame.

Step 3: Make legs of top rectangular frame:

Then I added 4 vertical boards (legs) at the interior of end joints & applied screws to make them harder. I used level for good finishing. I applied some glue before screwing screws to make things easier.

Step 4: Make a bottom rectangular frame:

I repeated step 1 to build the bottom rectangular frame. Once again I used 4 pieces of wood to make a rectangular frame. Then I started screwing screws into the end joints to make them stiff.

Step 5: Connect top & bottom rectangular frames to make a box:

I placed the rectangular bottom frame on the ground & used a hammer to lock the legs of the top frame inside the bottom frame end joints. I applied screws & I have a box shape ready.

Step 6: Add 2 more boards to each corner:

I attached 2 more boards to each corner. This step is easy & I applied screws for hardness. Also it is recommended to cut the wood at exact dimensions or use pre-cut wood for good finishing.

Step 7: Bracing the stand:

Bracing the stand

Bracing the stand will increase its stiffness. Bracing is required for 4 feet aquarium. Any additional bracing is optional for a 4 feet fish tank. I used a level to see if everything is balanced or not.
