It is safe to use blue or black color for fish tank background. I choose to use blue Krylon paint to accomplish this task & I got it from Ebay for just 15 bucks. Only 1 spray paint bottle allowed me to offer 2 coats to bottom & background of my 4 feet fish tank. Watch the video tutorial which shows step by step process of spraying aquarium background & bottom.

Step 1: Wipe the dust off using cloth:

It is simple to spray paint aquarium background & its bottom. When cleaning aquarium first wipe the dust off. Use cloth & start cleaning from one end of the aquarium to the other & do not clean in circular motion because it will spread the dust around. For good cleaning it is better to use glass cleaner or add few drops of dish washing liquid in a spray bottle & shake it properly.

Step 2: Use glass cleaner to clean aquarium & apply masking tape to cover outside area:

Use the soapy water or glass cleaner to clean the bottom of fish tank first. I am using masking tape to cover the area which should not be painted but some people use newspaper. The most important part of this project is using spray paint & I am using Krylon Fusion for this purpose. It bonds perfectly to the glass & it is a blue color paint.

Step 3: Spray paint the bottom of aquarium:

For good finishing spray paint in sweeping motion from side to side & the distance b/w spray paint bottle & aquarium is recommended to be 8 inches. The tank glass can be handled after 1 hour. Any additional course can be applied within 24 hours or after 7 days. The bottom of the tank is completed with good finishing. I want to spray blue color at the back of my fish tank.

Step 4: Spray paint the back of aquarium:

I will repeat the same procedure for back of my aquarium again. I will wipe out the dirt, clean the surface, use masking tape & apply paint. Also I will make sure to wait for the paint to dry before handling the aquarium. You can use multiple coats of paint but have to wait for applying next coat. I am very happy with the finishing & it looks amazing.

Pros & cons of painting glass aquarium:

Fancy aquariums have colorful bottom & background. Painting background is very easy & cheap, & does not require any skills. You can customize your aquarium as you want & apply multiple colors of paint. However, it limits the visibility because you can clearly look at your fish with no background & it can put stress on some fish. Also background makes fish tank darker & light will be required to see fish.
