What is the best chemical filtration media for aquarium filter?
The objective of chemical
filtration media is to wipe out toxic chemicals from the water through chemical
reaction.
The widely used chemical filter
media is activated carbon that is able to remove substances such as tannins
& dissolved organic compounds.
Experts have different opinions
about using chemical filter media. Some prefer to use chemical filter media
full time. Others think that chemical filter media should be used in case of
emergency such as treating ammonia spikes or removing medicines from the
aquarium water.
Seachem Purigen:
Seachem Purigen is made up of a polymer,
which removes fish poop & other toxic chemicals from the aquarium water. It
is a better option than carbon due to its capability of absorbing many
different types of toxins.
Seachem Purigen will alter its
colour when it is used up & that will let aquarists know when to replace
it.
Seachem Purigen can be reused
after cleaning it with bleach.
It may look costly but 100 ml of
Purigen can filter out 100 gallons of water.
Purigen can wipe out fish waste
before good bacteria can feed on them. This may affect the beneficial bacteria
colonies & it is important to keep using Purigen to keep removing
impurities from the water.
Pros of Seachem Purigen:
- Best for wiping out toxins released from fish poop, leftover food, & other detritus
- Colour of Purigen will change when it is used up
- Purigen can be reused by treating it with bleach
- It is available for cheap price
Cons of Seachem Purigen:
- Purigen can wipe out fish poop before beneficial bacteria can eat them thus it can affect bacteria colonies.
Poly-Filter by Poly-Bio-Marine:
Poly Filter seems like a normal
filter floss however it is really a potent chemical filter for removing toxic
chemicals including ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, copper, medicines, phosphates
& tannins. Thus, it removes almost every impurity from the water.
The colour of the Poly Filter
alters that gives you an indication to replace it. You can cut it to fit the
size of your filter.
Similar to Purigen, Poly Filter
removes waste before good bacteria can feed on them thus it can affect bacteria
colonies.
You cannot restore Poly Filter so
it is more expensive than Seachem Purigen.
Pros of Poly-Filter:
- Removes heaps of toxic chemicals from the water
- Alters colour when it is used up
Cons of Poly-Filter:
- No way to reuse it after it is exhausted
- More expensive than Seachem Purigen
